In Texas, livestock brand registration is managed by the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA). If you're looking to register a livestock brand, here are the key requirements and steps:

1. Eligibility:

Who can register: The Texas Branding Iron Company may act as an Agent, on your behalf to coordinate with County Clerks throughout the state to register your brand.

Type of animals covered: The brand can be registered for use on cattle, horses, and other livestock.

2. Brand Design:

Unique: The brand must be distinguishable from all other registered brands in the county in which the brand is to be registered. The TSCRA and each County Clerk maintain a list of registered brands to prevent duplication.

Design options: The brand can consist of letters, numbers, or symbols (or a combination of these) and can be used on the animal’s hide or other applicable areas (such as the jaw or shoulder).

3. Brand Registration Process:

Application: A representative from the Texas Branding Iron Company will complete a Livestock Brand Registration Application form.

Provide details: The application asks for your name, address, and a description of the brand design, including its specific placement on the animal. We will also provide a drawing or sketch of the brand.

4. Fees:

The registration fee for a brand is typically around $26, but this fee can vary. There may be additional fees for renewing your brand every 10 years. Each brands in Texas needs to be re-registered in years ending in “1” (2011, 2021, 2031 for example) to remain active.

The fees are generally non-refundable.

5. Submission:

We will submit the completed application and payment to the desired County Clerk, on your behalf.

Depending on the requirements of the specific county, the application may be submitted online, by mail, or in person at the County Clerk’s office. The form will need to be notarized.

6. Approval:

Once your brand is registered, it will be officially recognized by the state, and you will receive a certificate of registration.

You will be granted exclusive use of the brand for livestock identification within Texas. Brands are registered “per county” and per specific location on the animal.

7. Renewal:

The registration must be renewed periodically (every 10 years, in years ending in “1”). Ensure you maintain the validity of your registration by keeping track of renewal deadlines. Renewals must be filed during the period August 31 to February 29.

8. Record Keeping:

Keep a copy of your registration certificate and brand drawing in case you need to prove ownership of your brand or livestock.

9. Enforcement:

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association’s Special Rangers can enforce the use of registered brands and investigate livestock theft or disputes related to ownership.
